APS Leadership Opportunities

Share your expertise and advise the physics community.

The Society’s strength lies in the diverse expertise and experiences of its members. APS depends on members who share their talents and serve in volunteer roles as leaders, providing guidance on all manners of issues important to the physics community.

APS accepts self-nominations for service on committees and the Board of Directors year-round. We encourage you to learn more about APS Committees and the APS Board of Directors.

Service on APS Committees

APS committee members play a critical advisory role for the Board of Directors and Council of Representatives, serving as experts who represent our membership at large.

Committee members must be current APS members. APS accepts nominations for committee membership year-round and considers nominee submissions in late summer. Appointment decisions are announced in November. Committee terms run from January 1 through December 31.

Committee members provide valuable guidance and input to the APS Board, Council and staff members on process, policy, programming, and initiatives.

Committee service can serve as a catalyst for additional leadership roles, such as service on the Board of Directors.

You must be an APS member with a myAPS account to log on and self-nominate. If you do not have an account, you may create an account.

Service on the APS Board of Directors

All current APS members are eligible to nominate themselves to serve on the APS Board of Directors.

Led by the APS President, the Board of Directors holds ultimate responsibility for the Society’s actions, and works to support the organization's mission to advance physics by fostering a vibrant, inclusive, and global community dedicated to science and society.

APS accepts nominations for Board service year-round and considers nominee submissions in the spring. Election results are announced following the fall Council of Representatives meeting. Board members serve a three-year term, which begins on January 1 following the fall Council election.

You must be an APS member with a myAPS account to log on and self-nominate. If you do not have an account, you may create an account.
