Welcome to the sixth edition of APS Careers, a guide to opportunity for physics graduates.

Careers Guide 2025 cover

This edition, which coincides with the International Year of Quantum (IYQ) Science and Technology, focuses on the many important ways that this field continues to develop new approaches, with applications in everything from cancer detection, to optimizing trade and navigation networks — even to the discovery of new knowledge about the universe.

The promise of quantum information science and technology (QIST) has resulted in an explosion of career opportunities for physicists. Because the quantum field is so young, there is a tremendous opportunity to ensure that the quantum workforce is representative and inclusive of a broad range of backgrounds and experiences from the start, rather than needing to “retrofit” to attend to considerations of equity down the road.

As a physicist, you possess unique skills and knowledge that can equip you for success in the quantum field. Many growing quantum companies were founded by physicists, and a physicist’s familiarity with quantum concepts like entanglement and superposition can form the foundation on which these companies are built. At the same time, the lab and technical skills you’ve developed through your training — regardless of your level of quantum specialization — promise to be in high demand as companies move from conceptualization to implementation and production.

APS is therefore very excited to support this QIST-themed edition of the APS Careers Guide, and hopes that you will find inspiration, guidance, and information that will help you connect with your future career, whether in the field of quantum science and technology or elsewhere. We also encourage you to further explore the information and resources available through the APS careers website and many great quantum jobs listed on the APS physics job board.

We hope that you find this guide valuable, and wish you every success in finding a fulfilling career.
