Annual Leadership Meeting

Jan 29–31, 2025
Grand Hyatt Washington, Washington, D.C.

Connect with APS members at this special event

The APS Annual Leadership Meeting (ALM) will bring together invited American Physical Society members and leaders of the scientific community to enhance their skills as volunteers, network, learn from peers, and shape physics' future.

At the Grand Hyatt Washington in Washington, D.C., from Jan. 29-31, 2025, invited attendees will:

  • Connect with others who share a passion for APS community leadership
  • Share best practices and cultivate stronger alignment with peer groups
  • Celebrate the accomplishments of volunteers

Attendees can also participate in Congressional Visits Day on Jan. 28-29, APS’s annual kickoff advocacy event.

Pre-event: Congressional Visits Day

Congressional Visits Day (CVD) brings dozens of APS members to Capitol Hill to advocate on behalf of the physics community. Meetings with constituents are one of the most effective ways to influence policymakers.

Each APS member who is selected to attend participates in a comprehensive training process, learning APS’ policy priorities so that they can speak confidently to elected officials and Congressional staff.

  • Abstract: Every member of APS has the potential to be a brand ambassador, championing the mission and values of the Society through everyday interactions. This session will cover essential communication skills, techniques for framing key messages, and the importance of seeking common ground. Attendees will leave with actionable strategies to represent their unit and APS effectively—and quickly—in real-world scenarios.
  • Speaker: Erik Bernstein, Director of Strategic Communications and Public Relations

Amplifying Impact: Celebrating the International Year of Quantum Science and Technology at APS (Cabin John)

We will highlight projects funded through the APS Innovation Fund that contribute to the IYQ celebrations, emphasizing their innovative approaches to outreach, education, and collaboration. Unit leaders will be encouraged to coordinate their own activities and connect with members to amplify the visibility of quantum-focused events within their communities. Join us to learn how you and your Units can participate, amplify your voice, and ensure your efforts are recognized as part of this global celebration. Leading through Advocacy: Opportunities to Advance Science Policy with APS (Cabin John)

  • Abstract: Advocacy is a potent tool to help shape the future of physics and for physicists. U.S. policymakers determine the nation’s science priorities, who’s eligible for visas, and where oversight and new guidelines are required. While Congressional Visits Day kicks off our advocacy each year, it’s just one of many opportunities for APS volunteers to make their voices heard. Learn how APS Government Affairs decides policy priorities, creates legislative strategies in a rapidly changing political landscape, and partners with APS Units and members to advance the Society’s policy priorities. We’ll discuss opportunities for APS Units and volunteer leaders to be involved with advocacy beyond CVD, and brainstorm ways for you to make an impact on the topics that matter most to you.
  • Speakers:
    • Charlotte Selton, Member Advocacy Senior Associate
    • Julie Davis, Federal Relations Senior Associate
    • Nico Hernández Charpak, Science Policy Manager
    • Mark Elsesser, Director of Public Affairs

Strengthening Industry Connections: From Member Value to Sponsorships (Arlington)

  • Abstract: The APS Industry Relations Session focuses on enhancing engagement for unit leaders with industry professionals through strategic membership development and corporate partnerships. The session aims to define compelling membership benefits, create targeted conference experiences, and establish robust industry-academic collaboration platforms. The session provides a foundation for securing organizational partnerships and funding through customized sponsorship packages. You'll learn initial strategies to align these packages with your specific goals - whether building a physics talent pipeline or obtaining program funding - while demonstrating clear value to potential partner organizations. Through interactive exercises in value proposition mapping, sponsorship package design, and networking strategies, participants will explore innovative approaches to recruiting, retaining, and supporting industry scientists within the APS ecosystem.
