APS Letter to the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine and the Ukrainian Physical Society

Oct. 7, 2026

Professor Anatoly G. Zagorodny
President, National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine

Professor Igor O. Anisimov
President, Ukrainian Physical Society

Dear President Zagorodny and President Anisimov,

On behalf of the American Physical Society (APS), I am writing to express our deep concern and solidarity following the September 28 strike on the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine. We extend our heartfelt condolences to the families, colleagues, and friends of those who lost their lives, and we wish a full and speedy recovery to those who were injured. We recognize the profound impact that such an event has on the scientific community and on those who work within and support Ukraine’s research institutions.

APS remains committed to international scientific cooperation and to building connections among physicists around the world. We are concerned about the impact of this attack on the Ukrainian scientific enterprise and will continue to foster the engagement of Ukrainian scientists with the global physics community, especially through the APS Global Physics Summit satellite events that have been organized in Ukraine in recent years, as well as the APS Distinguished International Researchers in Areas of Conflict program.

Please know that our thoughts are with you, your colleagues, and the broader Ukrainian scientific community during this difficult time.

Sincerely,

Brad Marston
APS President
