NSF Forward: Closing Push Email

Sept 18, 2026

Six weeks ago, we asked the research community two questions about the future of the National Science Foundation (NSF), and soon the NSF Forward task force will consider your input alongside commissioned white papers as it develops its recommendations.

These recommendations are meant to position NSF for durable, bipartisan support, and to reflect the breadth of the research community. Feedback so far has come from many perspectives — different disciplines, different roles, different career stages. We want even more, so we've extended the deadline to end-of-day Monday, Sept. 21.

Here's what we're asking:

  • What does NSF do well that you would like to ensure is maintained?
  • What should NSF stop doing, change or do differently, or start doing?

To everyone who has already answered, thank you. If you haven't, please do. Either way, forward this to a colleague who may not have seen it.

The next 75 years of this agency will be shaped by many hands. There's still time for yours to be among them.

With gratitude,

Brad Marston
