Anatoly Spitkovsky
Princeton University

Citation:

"For generating Weibel-mediated collisionless shocks in the laboratory, impacting a broad range of energetic astrophysical scenarios, plasma physics, and experiments using high energy and high power lasers conducted at basic plasma science facilities."

Background:

Anatoly Spitkovsky got his Bachelors of Science degree in Physics from Caltech in 1995 and PhD in Physics from UC Berkeley in 2002. He is currently a Professor of Astrophysical Sciences at Princeton University. His research is in the area of high energy astrophysics, particularly on particle acceleration in astrophysical environments, collisionless shocks, supernova remnants, and pulsar magnetospheres. He is also involved in the design and analysis of laboratory astrophysics experiments in high energy density plasmas. He has been a Sloan Foundation Fellow and is currently a Simons Foundation Investigator in Physics.
