Jian Ping Gong received her bachelor's degree in electronic physics from Zhejiang University and earned her Doctor of Engineering for studying high Tc superconductors from Tokyo Institute of Technology. She also received her Doctor of Science from Hokkaido University for studying polymer sciences. She is the Distinguished Professor of Faculty of Advanced Life Science and PI of ICReDD at Hokkaido University. Her research involves developing bio-inspired functional hydrogels and elucidating physical-chemical mechanisms. Her best-known work includes tough double network hydrogels, self-healing hydrogels, hydrogel friction and adhesion, hydrogel composites, and self-growing hydrogels. Her honors include the Chemical Society of Japan Award in 2022, the DSM Materials Sciences Award in 2014, The CSJ Award for Creative Work (The Chemical Society of Japan) in 2011, The Award of the Society of Polymer Science Japan in 2006, The Wiley Polymer Science Award (Physics, the Society of Polymer Science Japan) in 2001.
