Is there a family leave policy for graduate students? If so, describe.
Graduate students in thesis-based degree programs, who have full-time student status, may be eligible to request up to eight (8) weeks of parental leave. The Parental Leave Policy is designed to assist students who are primary child-care providers immediately following the birth or adoption of a child. The Policy is designed to make it possible for students to maintain full-time status in research-based degree programs while taking a leave from that program to care for their new child, and facilitate planning for continuance of their degree program. Is there family health insurance for graduate students? If so, is it included in the stipend?
Yes, health insurance is provided. The health insurance fee is covered by either the teaching or research assistantship that supports the student.

The CSM Physics is a highly collaborative department with strengths in condensed matter, renewable energy, optical and nuclear physics (see http://physics.mines.edu/). This spirit of collaboration readily extends to the nearby national laboratories (NOAA, NIST, NREL). Within this environment, we take concrete steps to create an inclusive community that values diversity. Specific examples include:
Our department sponsors the activities of the Graduate Women in Physics (GWiP) club, which includes social events, luncheons and speakers.
Our department has implemented a mentoring program where graduate women are paired with a faculty mentor outside of their group. Monthly meetings over coffee are used to provide guidance on the pitfalls of graduate study and long-term goals.
We hosted the Rocky Mountain Conference for Undergraduate Women in Physics in January 2013. The goal of this conference was to help undergraduate women continue in physics by providing them with information about graduate school and professions in physics and access to other women in physics of all ages with whom they shared experiences, advice, and ideas.
The Department is active within the campus-wide Diversity committee, the Women in Science, Engineering and Mathematics (WISEM) program, and the Society of Women Engineers (SWE). CSM has the largest SWE chapter in the U.S.
The quality of life in Golden is high and the town is well situated to enjoy both the city and the mountains.
