Is there a family leave policy for graduate students? If so, describe.
Emergency Family/Medical Leave (EFML) is for graduate students who must leave school due to a medical or family emergency that is defined under the federal Family Medical Leave Act. EFML entitles graduate students in good standing to be away from the university but maintain some benefits and services during their leave period, including faculty and staff counsel, and use of other University offerings. EFML status also entitles graduate students to maintain their eligibility for student health insurance on a self-pay basis for a period of one semester as approved by Health and Wellness Services. Students need to have been a participant in the student health insurance plan immediately preceding the EFML leave to be eligible.
Is there family health insurance for graduate students? If so, is it included in the stipend?
There is an insurance plan in place for the employee and it is included in the stipend. Family plans are available at a cost and are not included in the stipend.
Please describe why someone applying to graduate school who is interested in a female-friendly department should choose your department.
Washington State University is situated in the heart of an energetic and teeming community, Pullman, Washington, and is eight miles away from another major university in Moscow, Idaho. Two college communities within close proximity offer a large variety of regional events, intellectual and recreational pursuits, but with a smaller, community atmosphere. The area offers a "child friendly" atmosphere with excellent schools and child care, close distances of travel to schools, parks, events, and sports, yet with awareness for safety issues. For instance, Women's Transit at WSU offers rides and provides an escort service directly to one's home on late nights. Pullman's Community Action Center offers food, shelter, and help to low-income and needy families. Pullman and WSU give students and families the opportunity to enjoy the beauty, peace, and feel of a small community, but with many advantages of a "big city."
