In addition to serving on the Governance Committee in 2018-20, I had earlier served on the Committee on Constitution & Bylaws in 2010-2012, in 2012 as Chair, and I co-chaired the Subcommittee drafting the APS Policies and Procedures in 2014 as part of APS corporate reform.
One of the great strengths of APS has been the quality of its volunteer leadership in the units and committees, on the Council and Board and in the Presidential Line. I've had the opportunity to work with many of these exceptional people for more than thirty years, with the Division of Physics of Beams, the Far West Section, in various aspects of APS governance, as first Speaker of the APS Council in 2015 and 2016, and on later committee work. This experience has shaped my vision of the qualities that make an effective leader, and the converse. Strong leadership is essential for the continued vitality of APS and its ability to evolve to meet changing demands. By choosing candidates from diverse backgrounds, APS has benefited by a broad range of perspectives. As a member of the Nominating Committee chair line, I would try to recruit a strong and diverse pool of candidates for APS leadership.
