Wiki Scientist Course

Elevating the Visibility of Quantum Scientists on Wikipedia

Communicating science effectively to the public is essential in enhancing trust in and support of science, which in turn can lead to support for better science policy and funding. But how can we add to the current channels scientists are using to reach people outside their specific scientific communities?

As part of APS’s continued efforts to better equip scientists to communicate with the public, we will be holding a third Wiki Scientist Course focused on increasing the availability and accuracy of information about quantum science on Wikipedia. Wiki Education's Wikipedia experts will guide course participants through the process of adding digestible knowledge about quantum science to Wikipedia. Applications open October 19th, 2020.

The barriers to entry into the “Wikipedia ecosystem” can often deter scientists from taking the time to learn Wikipedia’s technical, procedural, and cultural practices, so this course gives physicists the dedicated time and support to engage in this science communication on a grand scale.

You Make the Difference
Between the 14 editors who participated in the Spring 2020 course:

  • 20 articles were created
  • 109 articles were edited
  • 890 total edits were made
  • 567 references were added

There were more than 905,000 views (and growing!) of those articles that were created or updated for the project.

One course alumni helped to facilitate editWikipedia4BlackLives during the #Strike4BlackLives. This resulted in:

  • 60 new articles
  • 493 articles edited
  • 2,230 total edits

Those articles received more than 7.6 million article views.

This course represents a partnership between APS and Wiki Education.
