2016 Nobel Prize in Physics
David J. Thouless, F. Duncan M. Haldane, and J. Michael Kosterlitz won this year's Nobel Prize in Physics for using topological concepts in theoretical condensed matter physics. They pioneered a new understanding of phase transitions, paving the way for current and future work with topological insulators, superconductors, and other materials.
