The Lead Editor will provide intellectual leadership and vision for editorial standards and policies, direct the journal, and lead its editorial board and staff of editors. Physical Review E (PRE) is a broad and interdisciplinary journal focusing on collective phenomena of many-body systems. As the APS flagship journal in the interrelated areas of statistical, nonlinear, biological, and soft matter physics, PRE covers recent developments in complex fluids, polymers, liquid crystals, and granular materials. The journal also includes sections on solid mechanics, fluid dynamics, plasma physics, computational physics, networks, and complex systems. The ideal candidate will possess the following qualifications: stature in a field of research within the scope of PRE and a broad interest in the other areas it covers; editorial service with scholarly journals; ability to work effectively with an international community of authors, referees, and editors; an understanding of the challenges faced by authors from underrepresented groups; and the advocacy skills, integrity, and wisdom to lead the journal. The Lead Editor may maintain their present position and location while devoting 10% to 20% of their time to this position. The initial appointment is for a three-year term with renewal possible after review. Compensation is negotiable and dependent on established time commitment. The desired starting date is 1 January 2021, but other arrangements can be made. The researcher will work in Professor Eric Burns's group on analysis of on-going high energy missions, multi-mission data analysis, and software and theoretical development to support these efforts. The primary focus will be to understand transient events that are, or may be, sources of multiple messengers, e.g. gamma-ray bursts, core-collapse supernova, magnetar giant flares, etc. This can be achieved through theory and/or simulation advancement, and multi-mission data analysis. A key goal of this work is interdisciplinary results with other fields of physics, such as gravitation and supranuclear matter. Additionally, the researcher will assist in the mentoring graduate students, develop software related to the primary scientific goals, and to publish papers and present at conferences. National and international travel may be required. The senior postdoctoral research will additionally be expected to lead independent research projects related to the core science goals of the group. Oak Ridge, Tennessee, We are seeking a Plasma Material Interactions (PMI) Science Lead to lead the development of a science program focused on plasma-materials interactions for fusion energy, leveraging the extensive materials expertise at Oak Ridge National Lab (ORNL), ORNL’s PMI collaborations at fusion facilities worldwide, and ORNL’s future hosting of the Materials Plasma Exposure Experiment (MPEX).   This position will reside in the ORNL Fusion Energy Division (FED), reporting to the Division Director, and include significant interfacing with the Nuclear Structural Materials Group in the Materials Science and Technology Division (MSTD).   As part of a research team focused on providing solutions to critical issues for practical fusion energy development, the incumbent will carry out and coordinate research focused on developing the science of plasma-material interactions in the extreme environment anticipated in future magnetically confined fusion energy systems. The  Fusion Nuclear Science, Technology, and Engineering Section  will   establish the technical basis and provide cost-attractive solutions for fusion subsystems needed to turn a burning plasma into a viable commercial power plant.   A primary focus will be the generation of the necessary technical foundations and development of innovative approaches for individual components and integrated systems that meet the rigors of the fusion environment while delivering robust, high-performance functionality. Oak Ridge, Tennessee, Overview:    We are seeking Group Leaders for the  Fusion Nuclear Science, Technology, and Engineering Groups.   The selected Group Leaders will be part of the  Fusion Nuclear Science, Technology, and Engineering Section  which   provides the technical basis and resolves key challenges in achieving and sustaining high performance burning plasmas in fusion devices and consists of the groups below.   A primary focus of this Section will be the generation of the necessary technical foundations and development of innovative approaches for individual components and integrated systems that meet the rigors of the fusion environment while delivering robust, high-performance functionality.    Selection will be based on qualifications, relevant experience, skills, and education.   Blanket and Fuel Cycle - Provide the technical basis and solutions for closing the tritium fuel cycle and efficient power extraction in future fusion systems.   Fusion Technology - Develop innovative technology approaches for heating, fueling, and controlling plasmas required for efficient operation of future fusion systems.   Fusion Engineering - Develop advanced designs and engineering solutions for both individual components and integrated systems for future US and international fusion systems.   Remote Systems - Provide creative solutions for remote monitoring and manipulation in extreme environments, including fusion, fission, and spallation systems.     Purpose:   Provide Research and Development (R&D) leadership to the group that strategically advances science and technology consistent with ORNL’s aspiration to be the world’s premier R&D institution and ORNL’s science culture.   The  R&D Group Leader  brings together a group of peers with the primary goal of pursuing global scientific leadership in their field, nurtures ORNL’s culture among group members, and continues to build and scale up individual excellence and impact in R&D.
