Engaging & Organizing Your Community Around Issues That Matter

When President Obama made the phrase “community organizing” a household term, many of us wondered what exactly that meant. Some of us wondered because we wanted to do it too! In this session, I’ll draw upon my experience as a political campaign professional to discuss how to start authentically engaging your community and organizing people around issues and causes, whether political, social, or otherwise. We’ll discuss the importance of storytelling, how to message a winning issue, how to fight the fatigue of an overwhelming number of issues to care about, and how to hone in on your audience. Consider this a community organizing starter pack!

Assessing Informal Physics Programs: Identifying Appropriate Methodologies
August 9, 2021
12:00 - 2:00 p.m. ET
Register Now
This workshop will focus on the challenges in assessing informal physics programs, how to develop research agendas for a program, and how to start thinking about assessment and research in these environments. Organizers will present some guidelines and resources, but a significant amount of time will be used to consider the best assessment tools/practices for the program they designed. Discussion of feasibility of proposed assessments and other feedback will be given. The intent is not to showcase specific methodologies but to establish a broader plan of action. Additionally, you will connect with other people interested in research-driven public engagement programs to build community and collaboration. Workshop attendees will take away ideas about how to leverage the effective design of informal settings towards increased resources and support.
