An Introduction to Forensic DNA Typing

September 15, 2021
Virtual

Date: September 15, 2021, Virtual
Speaker: Peter M. Vallone, Ph.D., Leader, Applied Genetics Group, NIST
Title: An Introduction to Forensic DNA Typing
Time: 1:00 p.m. Eastern Time (US and Canada). Attendees can sign in anytime after 12:30 p.m.

Abstract
Forensic DNA typing for law enforcement purposes has been used for over 20 years. In this talk the basics of the DNA typing workflow and the common genetic marker systems used will be illustrated. The process of typing a sample through data interpretation will be shown as well as the support provided by specific standards and NIST involvement in documentary standards groups. The forensic application of the emerging methods of next generation sequencing and Rapid DNA instrumentation will be introduced.

Biography
Peter M. Vallone received his Ph.D. in Chemistry from the University of Illinois at Chicago in 1999. Afterwards he was awarded an NRC postdoctoral fellowship that brought him to the Biotechnology Division at National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST). Over the last 20 years at NIST Dr. Vallone has developed multiplex PCR assays for the detection of genetic variation, developed methods for the rapid amplification of STR loci, and has been involved in the characterization of nucleic acid-based reference materials.

As leader of the Applied Genetics Group at NIST since 2013 Dr. Vallone works with a team of researchers producing DNA reference materials, assessing emerging techniques such as next generation sequencing and digital PCR. The group efforts provide research and training that supports the forensic DNA community. Dr. Vallone has published over 75 peer-reviewed articles in the areas of DNA thermodynamics and human identity testing.
