Title: Virtual Tour of Radio Astronomy and the Green Bank Observatory

Abstract: During this one hour virtual tour, Sue Ann Heatherly will discuss the basics of radio astronomy, radio telescopes, and the history of the Green Bank Observatory. The talk will also focus on the Green Bank Telescope and the science being done. Finally, she will demo the 20 Meter Telescope, in real time. Submit your questions ahead of time and she will tailor the talk to your interests!

Biography: Sue Ann Heatherly is the senior education officer at the Green Bank Observatory, and directs the educational programs there. Heatherly started her career as a science teacher in rural West Virginia and in 1989 she was hired by the Green Bank Observatory to build an education and outreach program. Since then she has led many programs and projects focusing on astronomy education and STEM experiences including professional development programs for teachers, residential programs for youth, and opportunities for teachers and students to work together with professional scientists to conduct astronomical research using data collected by the Robert C. Byrd Green Bank Telescope. She is currently a principal investigator in an NSF funded INCLUDES project to create a statewide Alliance aimed at improving the success of first generation students studying Science, Technology, Engineering and Math fields at higher education institutions in West Virginia.
