Graduate students are covered by the Family Medical Leave Act. Up to 12 weeks of unpaid medical leave is guaranteed to all graduate students with at least 1250 hours of work in the previous year.

Is there family health insurance for graduate students? If so, is it included in the stipend?

For individual insurance policies, 79% of the cost is covered by the University (21% or $230 annually is the responsibility of the student). Family coverage is available, purchased by students (currently $3674/spouse and $1816/each child).

Our department is enjoying an exciting period of growth. Its most recent hires and enormous success in research funding have increased the need for excellent students. This growth has included its selection as a Tier-2 computing center for CMS and the inauguration of the Diocles Extreme Light Laboratory. Three of our most recent hires have been members of under-respresented groups, including 2 women. All are well-funded (each securing an NSF CAREER or POWRE grant, and all with additional funding from NSF, NIH, DOE, and/or NASA) and have already established strong research programs. During the past 5 years, graduate student enrollment has increased from 46 to 74. Throughout that growth, women have comprised about 25-30% of our incoming graduate students, a culturally diverse group representing 10 different countries. A short distance down the hall from the first floor classroom area, is a new 80 sq. ft. nursing station. This was successfully lobbied for by a number of both faculty and graduate students with new families. The new building's location places it near the on-campus daycare facility, which is open to both faculty and students.
