Is there a family leave policy for graduate students? If so, describe.

Graduate students may apply for a leave of absence with the NMSU Graduate School. FMLA applies to graduate assistants, if they have worked a sufficient number of hours during the previous year.

Is there family health insurance for graduate students? If so, is it included in the stipend?

Health insurance is available from the institution, but not required by the institution and not included in the stipend. Domestic graduate students are referred to current IRS guidelines about the individual mandate (which are in flux) and the state health exchange. International graduate students are required to have health insurance as part of their visa requirements. The institution bills this to their fee accounts.

Do you have a Woman in Physics Group? If yes, please include link to their website if they have one.

No.

Do you have a Physics Graduate Student Association? If yes, please include link to their website if they have one.

Yes, we have a graduate student association, but they do not have a web site.

What other relevant student groups are there in your institution?

Society of Physics Students chapter. We also have a society of engineering physics undergraduate students.

Has your institution ever hosted a Conference for Undergraduate Women in Physics? If yes, which year?

No.

Has your institution ever hosted an APS Climate Site Visit for Women and Minorities in Physics?

We may have had a climate site visit for minorities in physics.

Please describe why someone applying to graduate school who is interested in a female-friendly department should choose your department.

We have a good percentage of female students in our department and we are actively promoting them in their studies. As a small department, we are able to monitor the progress of all students.

Please include the name of faculty or staff member and an email they can be reached at for further questions.
