Is there a family leave policy for graduate students? If so, describe.

The Dartmouth Guarini School of Graduate and Advanced Studies' child accommodation policy is designed to assist a graduate student, who is the primary child-care provider, immediately following the birth or adoption of a child. The policy does not intend to replace communication between the student and his or her advisors, but rather serves to establish a uniform and supportive guideline for graduate students.

Under the child accommodation policy, a full-time stipend-supported graduate student is eligible for up to twelve weeks of accommodation from his or her graduate program. Under most circumstances, the Guarini School of Graduate and Advanced Studies will provide up to six weeks of support and the student's department will provide up to six weeks of support during this period. If a student is supported by a funding mechanism that is incompatible with this accommodation policy, or if a student's program is unable to provide matching support, the Guarini School of Graduate and Advanced Studies will provide up to twelve weeks of support. In the event that both parents are full-time graduate students, the benefit by this policy can be shared between the parents as they choose, but the total amount of accommodation provided will not exceed twelve weeks.

During this period of accommodation, the graduate student will continue to be enrolled and will receive their full level of stipend support and health benefits. In addition, an automatic one-term extension will be granted to complete their degree. The Guarini School of Graduate and Advanced Studies requires the graduate student to discuss his or her plans for accommodation with the Assistant Dean and his or her advisors as soon as possible, but, in any case, in advance of the leave in order to allow adequate planning.

Is there family health insurance for graduate students? If so, is it included in the stipend?

Health insurance coverage for dependents beyond the student is available to purchase at a reasonable rate. Health insurance for the student is included as a supplement to the tuition waiver and stipend.

Please describe why someone applying to graduate school who is interested in a female-friendly department should choose your department.

Foremost, Dartmouth College offers a cutting-edge PhD research program in physics and astronomy. In addition, the environment is definitely welcoming to women scientists and students, who comprise over 25% of tenure/tenure-track faculty, graduate students, and PhD recipients in the last 10 years. Thanks to the small size of our graduate program, all of our students have the opportunity for close faculty interactions and mentoring. Small classes and research groups provide a non-intimidating learning and research environment. Specific programs such as Dartmouth's Women in Science Project and the Physics And Astronomy Women group also offer career guidance and support for women.

Please include the name of faculty or staff member and an email they can be reached at for further questions.
