Recruitment Resources

The NMC program relies on the support of mentors to continue inviting new mentees into our community. Here are recruitment presentations that mentors can download and use in lectures, conferences, and relevant meetings. Please contact nmc@aps.org if you have feedback or questions about using these presentations.

NMC One-Slide Overview format-powerpoint

  • Overview: This single slide provides an overview of the NMC and can be added to existing presentations you may have.

NMC Recruitment Presentation (Department Chairs) format-powerpoint

  • Presenter(s): Physics Department Chairs
  • Audience: Physics faculty
  • Overview: This 7-slide deck provides physics department chairs with an overview of the components and benefits of the APS National Mentoring Community. The intent of this presentation is to expand awareness of the NMC Program in an effort to recruit more mentors and mentees into the community.
  • Strategies for use:
    • Devote ~5-10 minutes in a department meeting agenda to discuss the NMC
    • Invite a NMC Mentor in your department to speak about the NMC in a department meeting. NMC Staff can share the names of people at your institution who are NMC Mentors.

  • Audience: Undergraduate physics students, specifically minoritized and marginalized students.
  • Overview: This 9-slide deck provides NMC Mentors with common language for defining the role and benefits of mentoring as well as outlines components and benefits of the APS National Mentoring Community. The intent of this presentation is to expand awareness of the NMC Program in an effort to recruit more mentees into the community.
  • Strategies for use:
    • Share this information during the first week of class
    • Include this information in presentations and workshops for students
    • Include this with departmental information about student success strategies, campus resources, and professional development and research opportunities, such as department newsletters or bulletin boards

  • Audience: Undergraduate physics students, specifically minoritized and marginalized students.
  • Overview: This 8-slide deck defines the role and benefits of mentoring as well as outlines components and benefits of the APS National Mentoring Community. The intent of this presentation is to expand awareness of the NMC Program in an effort to recruit more undergraduate mentees into the community.
  • Strategies for use:
    • Invite a NMC Mentee who is involved in your organization to present about NMC at an organization meeting
    • Invite a NMC Mentor from your institution to present about NMC at an organization meeting
    • Invite NMC Staff to facilitate a virtual workshop on mentoring to your organization
