HBCU and BSI Chairs Summit 2020

February 6, 2020
12 noon - 7:00 p.m. (including dinner)
Hilton Garden Inn–University of Central Florida

We have reached capacity and online registration is now closed. Please reach out to nmc@aps.org if you are interested in attending the Summit.

Over the last two decades, the number of physics bachelor's degrees earned by African Americans has decreased substantially. In an effort to reverse this alarming trend, the APS Committee on Minorities in Physics founded the Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU) and Black Serving Institutions (BSI) Chairs Summit.

HBCU and BSI physics department chairs are urged to join us as we navigate the reasons behind the decline and identify actions that can be taken to recruit and retain more underrepresented students. This summit will take place on the first day of the National Mentoring Community Conference.

The meeting will focus on several key areas for discussion:

  • Potential for APS to help facilitate HBCU collaboration/consortium efforts with national labs and other private sector organizations.
  • Leveraging resources to increase recruitment and retention of physics students at HBCUs and BSIs.
  • Strengthening relationships between department chairs in order to support collaboration and consortium efforts.

Cost:

This summit is free to attend for any chair from an HBCU or BSI physics department. Travel costs up to $500 are eligible to be reimbursed. Hotel accommodations will be covered by APS. To make your reservation, please contact Diversity Programs Coordinator Imisi Agbaniyaka (nmc@aps.org).

All summit participants are expected to abide by the Code of Conduct for APS Meetings.
