Citation:

"For pioneering the development of adjoint methods and application of shape calculus for fusion plasmas, enabling a new derivative-based method of stellarator design."

Background:

Elizabeth Paul received her A.B. with high honors in Astrophysical Sciences from Princeton University in 2015. While an undergraduate student, she worked as an intern at the Princeton Plasma Physics Laboratory and wrote a senior thesis on MHD modeling of turbulent star formation. In 2020 she received her Ph.D. in physics from the University of Maryland, College Park. At Maryland, she developed advanced numerical methods for the optimization of stellarator magnetic fields under the supervision of Prof. Bill Dorland and Dr. Matt Landreman. She received several honors during her graduate career, including the Monroe H. Martin Graduate Research Fellowship, the ARCS Foundation Fellowship, and the Outstanding Research Assistant Award. Elizabeth is currently a Presidential Postdoctoral Fellow associated with Princeton University and the Princeton Plasma Physics Laboratory under the supervision of Prof. Amitava Bhattacharjee. Her current research continues to focus on theoretical and computational aspects of stellarator confinement. Elizabeth is a member of the American Physical Society.
