Citation:

"For leadership in the measurement of kaon decay properties and in particular for the discovery and measurement of K+→Π+vv."

Background:

Laurence Littenberg received an AB in physics from Cornell University in 1963 and did graduate work at the University of California at San Diego under Professor Oreste Piccioni, receiving a Ph.D. in 1969. His thesis was a study of possible DS = DQ rule violation in neutral Ke3 decay.  He then worked for four years at the Daresbury Laboratory studying meson photoproduction.  Among other experiments was a search for isotensor photons and a study of backward resonance production.  He next took a position at Brookhaven National Laboratory where he conducted experiments at the Lab's Alternating Gradient Synchrotron.  These included a study of KL in which several new decay modes were discovered, searches for new particles, and a series of experiments primarily searching for and then studying the rare decay K+→Π+vv. More recently he has been a participant in the Daya Bay Reactor Neutrino Experiment.  He was a group leader in the Brookhaven Physics Department from 1989 to 2007 and is currently a Senior Physicist and Associate Chair for High Energy Physics in that department. Dr Littenberg is a Fellow of the APS and a recipient of a 2000 Brookhaven Science and Technology Award.
