Margaret Galland Kivelson
UCLA: Earth, Planetary, and Space Sciences

Citation:

"For groundbreaking discoveries in space plasma physics and for seminal theoretical contributions to understanding space plasma processes and magnetohydrodynamics."

Background:

Margaret Galland Kivelson received her A.B. in 1950 and her Ph.D. in 1957 from Radcliffe College of Harvard University. She is a Distinguished Professor Emerita at UCLA and a Research Professor at the University of Michigan. Her research has contributed to our understanding of particle acceleration and the properties of low frequency magnetohydrodynamic waves in the terrestrial magnetosphere and to our knowledge of the properties of the magnetic field and plasma dynamics of Saturn and of Jupiter and its moons. She serves as Team Leader of the magnetometer science team for the Europa Clipper mission, scheduled for launch in 2024. She is a member of the National Academy of Sciences and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, a Fellow of the American Philosophical Society, a Foreign Member of the Royal Society, UK, a Fellow of the American Geophysical Union and of the American Physical Society. She has been awarded the Alfvén Medal of the European Geosciences Union, the John Adam Fleming Medal of the American Geophysical Union, the Kuiper Prize of the Division of Planetary Sciences, American Astronomical Society, the Jean Dominique Cassini Medal of the European Geophysical Union, the Gold medal of the Royal Astronomical Society, the Centennial Medal of the Harvard University Graduate School of Arts and Sciences, and an Honorary Degree Doctor of Science (DSc), at the University of Leicester, UK.
