John Robert Kirtley
IBM T. J. Watson Research Center

Citation:

"For using phase-sensitive experiments in the elucidation of the orbital symmetry of the pairing function in high-Tc superconductors."

Background:

Dr Kirtley received his B.S. degree from the University of California, Santa Barbara in 1971, and his PhD. Degree from the same institution in 1976. From 1976 to 1978 he was a post-doctoral fellow and research assistant professor at the University of Pennsylvania. Since 1978, he has been a research staff member in the IBM Research Division.

His research interests have included inelastic electron tunneling spectroscopy, non-equilibrium superconductivity, surface enhanced Raman scattering, light emitting tunnel junctions, electron heating in SiO2, and low-temperature scanning tunneling microscopy. Since 1993, he has been working on developing the scanning SQUID microscope and applying it to fundamental and applied problems.

Dr. Kirtley is a Fellow of the APS, senior member of the IEEE, and member of the AAAS.
