Citation:

"For pioneering developments of the techniques and concepts of spectroscopic scanning tunneling microscopy."

Background:

Randall Feenstra is a professor of physics at Carnegie Mellon University (CMU). He received a B.Ap.Sc. in engineering physics from the University of British Columbia in 1978, and a Ph.D. in applied physics from Caltech in 1982. Dr. Feenstra spent 13 years as a research staff member at the IBM Research Laboratory in Yorktown Heights, New York, during which time he was active in applying the scanning tunneling microscope to the study of semiconductor materials. At CMU in 1995, he built a combined system for molecular beam epitaxy and STM study of GaN surfaces.  Most recently, Dr. Feenstra has been investigating the properties of two-dimensional materials. In 2001 and 2015, he was a Humboldt Fellow in Berlin. He is a fellow of the American Physical Society and of the American Vacuum Society.
