APS Exceptional Achievement Medal to Recognize Outstanding Fundamental Physics Research

Entrepreneur Jay Jones has endowed a new American Physical Society award to recognize leading advances from the entire the spectrum of physics research

College Park, MD – The APS Medal for Exceptional Achievement in Research is the first American Physical Society award that recognizes leading advances in our knowledge and understanding without limiting the physics disciplines eligible. The medal and an accompanying prize of $50 thousand will be awarded annually beginning in 2016, with the prize increasing as the endowment allows. Typically, a single physicist will be honored with the medal, although up to three recipients may be eligible to share the medal in a given year.

Benefactor Jay Jones developed an appreciation of physics in high school. Although he studied physics in college, Jones turned instead to business, founding the Olympic Medical Corporation in 1959. He has maintained a passion for physics, despite his detour into entrepreneurial pursuits. His endowment will establish the largest APS prize to date, and will be presented to researchers who have made the most significant contributions to fundamental physics research regardless of their specific field.

More information about the APS Medal for Exceptional Achievement in Research is available on the APS website and in APS News.
