Peering into Interfacial Water

For the first time, scientists have used a scanning tunneling microscope to image the internal orbital structure of interfacial water. The double-lobe and four-lobe structures, which arise from the highest occupied molecular orbitals of water, correspond to the water monomers and tetramers respectively.
