APS April Meeting

Preparing Students for Careers Outside Academia

Sunday, April 14, 2019
12:00 p.m. - 2:00 p.m.
Sheraton Downtown Denver

Director's Row H

The majority of the training and advice graduate students receive during their Ph.D. is aimed at helping them obtain academic positions, which is the expected career trajectory for Ph.D. graduates. However, the majority of physics Ph.D. graduates go on to careers in the private sector or government labs, and the skills and experience that graduate students should emphasize for employment in the private sector are different from academia. In this session, physicists and employers from outside academia will share their insights on how graduate students can prepare themselves for a non-academic career, as well as how departments can support graduate students for such employment.
