Head of Web Strategy

The American Physical Society (APS), a nonprofit membership organization working to advance and diffuse the knowledge of physics, seeks a communications professional for the position Head of Web Strategy. The Head of Web Strategy will drive the strategic planning, development, and implementation of the Society’s web properties. This position is responsible for managing and mentoring staff, delivering easy-to-use and attractive web solutions, overseeing day-to- day web operations, administering the content management system, and collaborating with team members to successfully plan, prioritize, and execute web initiatives. The ideal candidate can successfully balance leadership skills and a creative eye with an analytical mind and technical background.

Essential Functions:

  • Lead definition and implementation of a Society-wide web strategy
  • Establish, maintain, and continually evolve a web governance framework
  • Promote and facilitate strong collaboration and appropriate division of responsibilities among the web team and other groups who help support the websites including Marketing, IT, and internal stakeholders
  • Oversee website layout, navigation scheme, user experience, and architecture
  • Provide an influential voice for best practices in design, web development, and technology
  • Maintain, configure, and troubleshoot content management system
  • Mentor the web team and monitor the team’s growth to meet changing needs
  • Lead discovery efforts to understand user goals and shape them into digital initiatives aligned with the association’s broader strategies
  • Drive ongoing changes to improve site performance and to take advantage of unique opportunities to increase revenue or engagement through a deep understanding of analytics
  • Assess content opportunities and develop content strategies to meet internal and external goals and deliver excellent user experience
  • Run periodic competitive analyses and work with internal teams to determine if the results should drive change
  • Define and report on key performance indicators and other success factors to measure the impact of web initiatives

Education: Bachelor’s degree, or equivalent, in web design, information technology, computer science, communications, or other related fields, required,

Experience: 6-10 years progressive experience in a professional web management environment including administering content management systems, leading digital initiatives, and managing a team of website professionals. Experience managing large team in a multi-tasked, detail- and deadline-oriented environment

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • In-depth digital and web experience required, with proven success in overseeing website development and day-to- day management of web operations
  • Excellent interpersonal skills; experience building and managing high-performing, multi-disciplinary web teams
  • Experience facilitating discovery sessions and identifying and documenting goals and requirements
  • Deep expertise in web governance, web content management systems, and content strategy
  • Strong presentation skills with an ability to communicate technical principles effectively between technical and non-technical groups, and to share data, findings, and recommendations appropriate for senior management
  • Strong analytical skills
  • Proficient with HTML, CSS, responsive frameworks, Google Analytics, SEO, scripting languages, and content management systems
  • Previous experience in the association or publishing industry is a plus
  • Practical experience and a sound understanding of digital marketing, engagement analysis, analytics, web design, content strategy, and information architecture
  • Strong project management skills
