Short biography

Christine DarveChristine Darve is Engineering Scientist at the European Spallation Source (Lund, Sweden). She specializes in accelerator science and is internationally recognized for her work on the development for the LHC cryo-magnets, the LH2 absorber of the muon collider and the superconducting Radio-Frequency (RF) cavities of the future linac accelerators. Since 2011 she is responsible for coordinating European efforts towards designing and integrating the components of a cold linac to produce neutron beams by the end of the decade. Prior to joining the ESS, she spent 12 years as a staff Engineering Scientist at the Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory (Illinois, USA). She also worked several years at the accelerator division at CERN, first as a Fellow, then as a Project Associate and now as a consultant on international standardization and safety issues.

Darve graduated from the Institut Polytechnique de Sevenans (France) in 1996 and after a decade of experience in the field of cold temperatures she got her Ph.D. in Engineering at Northwestern University (Illinois, USA) on the topic of the superfluidity of helium. Darve is a fellow of the APS and a Fellow of the African Physical Society. She is a member of the executive committee of the American Standard of Testing and Materials (ASTM).

Darve has been involved in schools and workshops to promote science without barriers, academic freedom & human rights. She has been the main organizer of the first edition of the African School on Fundamental Physics and its Applications (ASP) hold in South Africa in August 2010 (~100 participants including 65 MSc and PhD students). The mission of this bi-annual 3-weeks school is to build expertise in the Least Developed Countries and to increase proficiency in applied science and technology. A second edition of the ASP was held this year in Ghana.

Darve has developed strong connections with international physics institutes and African Universities to continue her efforts in bringing science and technology at the reach of African students and young scientists.

Candidate Statement

I am running for election, as a Member at Large on the FIP Executive Committee of the APS in order to organize and contribute to events, which foster international science.

I very much enjoy working in a multi-disciplinary and multi-cultural scientific environment at Fermilab, at CERN and at the European Spallation Source. In my career, I have gained knowledge in the most prestigious arenas of fundamental physics, which beyond symbolizing center of excellence, have inherited from a philosophy responding to the humanitarian sense of social and scientific accomplishment.

This privileged professional environment gave me the possibility to discover the essence of the major scientific issues with the eyes of a project oriented and open-minded person. According to me, work and commitment in sciences are resonating leitmotifs for a balance life... Since my early professional assignments, I have been an advocate of improving international collaborations, hence aiming to purse the linkage between the different institutes, identifying and assessing the fundamental needs.

Due to my spirit of initiative, in 1996, I have been the executive secretary of Physics Without Borders and supported the establishment of a summer school in Sarajevo, where 100 students from the Balkan area have discovered the use of the World Wide Web as a window to sciences and technology (staring Robert Caillau as co-founder of the www). As a side commitment, being the main organizer of the ASP2010, I have enjoyed dealing with very challenging issues arising from such an ambitious initiative. In collaboration with world-renowned institutes, we have opened an outreach avenue to share knowledge without influence of borders.

In the future, my perspective is to further embrace the diversity program, promoting science and society without barriers, to promote applied sciences leading to innovations and to interact construct with the scientific community. We have the chance to be part of a unique world and time of scientific discovery; hence we have to support this gift whenever possible!
