Director – School of Polymers and High Performance Materials

The University of Southern Mississippi

The University of Southern Mississippi and the College of Science and Technology invite applications and nominations for the position of director of the School of Polymers and High Performance Materials (SPHPM). We seek an accomplished administrator and internationally recognized scholar with demonstrated leadership experience in polymer science and engineering research and a strong record of external funding. The director is chief administrative officer and will provide leadership and vision to enhance the School’s high-quality research and educational activities.

The SPHPM comprises 17 faculty with research programs in biomaterials and bioinspired polymers, composites and nanocomposites, materials for energy and the environment, and coatings and thin films with average annual external funding of ~$9.9M over the past three years. SPHPM is home to ~90 Ph.D. students and 90 undergraduate students; it offers polymer science B.S. and polymer science and engineering M.S. and Ph.D. degrees. The School also offers an online Master of Polymer Science and Engineering with an emphasis in composites engineering. The recently approved B.S. degree in polymer science and engineering provides the next director of SPHPM a unique opportunity to significantly impact the direction and trajectory of the program and associated faculty positions.

Desirable qualities of the successful candidate include prior administrative experience, leadership skills and ability to organize multidisciplinary projects, and experience with undergraduate and graduate programs. An earned doctorate in polymer science, engineering or a closely related discipline is required, and candidates must have credentials that would merit appointment as a full professor. The anticipated start date is January 1, 2013. Applications must be submitted online. Complete application consists of letter of interest outlining the qualifications for the position, a curriculum vitae, and names and contact information of at least three references. For inquiries about the position or to nominate a candidate, contact Dr. Gordon Cannon, Search Committee chair, at 601.266.5372 or via email. Review of applications begins August 15, 2012, and continues until the position is filled.
