Ernest D. Courant

"For his key role in the invention of the principle of Alternating Gradient Focusing, and his pioneering work in particle beam dynamics. This invention and the subsequent development of particle accelerators has made possible the exploration of the elementary constituents of matter, at the nuclear and subnuclear level, which has led to our new understanding of Elementary Particle Physics. It has also led to application of accelerators to many areas of science and technology such as Synchrotron Light Sources."
