Call for Proposals for DAMOP-sponsored Symposia and Invited Speakers at the 2009 APS March Meeting

Pittsburgh, PA, March 16-20, 2009

The DEADLINE for submitting nominations is September 8, 2008. The web site for nominating invited sessions and speakers for the APS March Meeting is now open at: http://meetings.aps.org/aps_invited2/invited/LoginForm.cfm

The DAMOP Program Committee will be organizing four invited sessions of five speakers each at the 2009 March Meeting, selected from among those nominated through the above website. THE PROGRAM COMMITTEE CAN ONLY INVITE SPEAKERS WHO HAVE BEEN NOMINATED.

In making proposals, please keep in mind the following guidelines:

  1. no individual may receive an invitation two years in a row (except winners of a Prize in the second year);
  2. a single invited session is not permitted to have two speakers from the same institution. A chair and a speaker from the same institution is acceptable;
  3. suggestions which will also appeal to other attendees of the March Meeting (e.g. DCMP) are most likely to be selected by the Program Committee;
  4. please consider suggesting symposia which are cosponsored by other units (e.g. DAMOP, DCP, DCMP,GQI).

To make a nomination, you will need to fill out the nomination form at the above web site. This includes detailed information about the proposed topic of the session and the proposed invited speakers. All proposals are useful, even if they are incomplete. If you want to maximize the success of your proposal, please consider some of the following suggestions:

  1. Include five speakers. The program committee attempts to accept proposals in their entirety, so "orphaned" talks rarely make it into the program.
  2. Choose an appropriate title and provide a clear justification.
  3. Choose titles of individual talks carefully, and provide an informative abstract for each talk. These are just to give the committee a rough idea -- speakers who are invited will be asked to submit their own title and abstract later.
  4. If possible, provide references to published work in refereed journals.
  5. If possible, please contact the speakers and include a note in the abstract about their response. The committee is more likely to choose a symposium where they know all of the speakers are likely to come.
  6. If possible, please include an alternate speaker in the abstract to provide a substitute in the event the first choice is unavailable.
  7. Nominate a session chair. As with the invited speakers, if possible please confirm that they are available.

Proposed sessions and speakers will also be considered for inclusion in the program of the DAMOP Annual Meeting (Charlottesville, VA, May 19-23, 2009), but there will be a SEPARATE call for proposals for that meeting in September.

APS March Meeting Contributed Abstracts:

The deadline for contributed abstracts will be Friday, November 21, 2008 at 5 P.M. EST. Information on submitting abstracts will be available at http://www.aps.org/meetings/march/abstracts.cfm. DAMOP members who are unfamiliar with the March Meeting should be aware that the poster sessions are often not well attended. DAMOP will be sponsoring a "Tutorial" on "cold atoms in optical lattices", and Focus Sessions on "disorder in ultra-cold gases", "magnetism in ultra-cold gases", "number or mass imbalanced Fermi gases and BEC-BCS crossover", and "dipolar gases / cold molecules".
