David Wineland

Citation:

"For his outstanding contributions to research on trapped ions, including leading one of the two groups to first demonstrate laser cooling of an atomic species, and developing the most accurate atomic clock based on atomic ions.  The methods perfected by him and his group led to the highest resolution radio frequency and optical spectroscopy of any atomic system, and also have provided insightful observation of crystallization of strongly coupled plasmas."
