How many graduate students-- male/female?

As of Fall 2009 we have 53 male and 29 female graduate students.

How many post doctoral associates - male/female?

The Department has 6 postdocs, 1 of whom is female.

Is there a family leave policy for graduate students? If so, describe.

We do not have a formal policy. We work with students individually to adjust work assignments to accommodate maternity or other family leave needs.

Is there family health insurance for graduate students? If so, is it included in the stipend?

Family health insurance is available but is not included in the stipend.

Please describe why someone applying to graduate school who is interested in a female-friendly department should choose your department.

Our department is committed to providing opportunities and a supportive environment for all graduate students, and makes special efforts to allow female students to achieve their full potential as scientists. Women in Physics and Astronomy, WIPHA (www.phy.ohiou.edu/~wipha/), is a local organization that connects female undergraduate and graduate students, postdocs, and faculty in an informal mentoring network. The department sponsors monthly WIPHA lunches where members can discuss science, career issues and related topics in an informal setting. The department overall has a relatively young faculty, a high level of research activity, and a strong tradition of collegiality at all levels. Our institution is committed to fostering diversity in all dimensions of university life.

Has the institution had a Climate for Women in Physics Site Visit or Gender Equity Conversation?
