Please describe why someone applying to graduate school who is interested in a female-friendly department should choose your department.

UCI had an NSF ADVANCE Institutional Transformation grant to promote gender equity in the hiring and advancement of faculty. In the last three years, 39% (11 of 28) of the newly-hired faculty in the School of Physical Sciences have been women. The Department of Physics and Astronomy has eight women faculty, and thus our graduate students have visible women role models. Women make up 22% of the graduate students in the Department of Physics & Astronomy. UCI has convienent and affordable on-campus housing for graduate students and their families. Women graduate students can take a one-quarter leave of absence for family leave without affecting their student housing status. Excellent on-campus day care for infants, toddlers and preschool children of undergraduate and graduate students is subsidized by UCI. Candid discussion about graduate life in our department written by recent students, both male and female, can be found at http://www.physics.uci.edu/ NEW/testimony.shtml

Has the institution had a Climate for Women in Physics Site Visit or Gender Equity Conversation?
