Not per say, but there is a minimum of 1 year and/or a minimum of 1250 hours on a job. This would qualify you for family medical leave.
Is there family health insurance for graduate students? If so, is it included in the stipend?
Yes, there is an option of family health insurance. It is NOT included in the graduate student stipend. Insurance is paid only for the graduate student. Graduate students can purchase family insurance at an additional cost.
Please describe why someone applying to graduate school who is interested in a female-friendly department should choose your department.
A prospective physics student interested in a female-friendly physics department should choose UT because it is a department where the female students are and feel treated with respect and consideration by the faculty and by fellow students. Approximately thirty percent of our undergraduate students and 20% of our graduate students are female. The department currently has four female professors and efforts towards increasing female faculty are being made. Activities to encourage female interaction, such as faculty/students luncheons, are sponsored by the department and weekly pre-colloquium coffees allow for the interaction of students with faculty. Picnics and get togethers to enjoy the beauty of the nearby Smoky Mountains are also routinely organized. In addition, we provide a strong program with many research opportunities in Condensed Matter, High Energy, Nuclear, Atomic Physics, Astrophysics, Biophysics and Computational Physics not only on campus but also at Oak Ridge National Lab. In short, our department offers a supportive environment to female students as well as a strong scientific program and beautiful surroundings.
