Is there a family leave policy for graduate students? If so, describe.

Any graduate student may take up to three semesters off without detailed application or appeal. There is no provision for paying students on leave. Our department is an engaged and strong advociate for our students, working to accommodate any special needs or situations that may require special considerations.

Is there family health insurance for graduate students? If so, is it included in the stipend?

Family health insurance is available. The Physics Department covers the health insurance costs for the student, but additional expenses for spouse/family coverage must be covered by the student.

Please describe why someone applying to graduate school who is interested in a female-friendly department should choose your department.

Our department is well known for its opportunities to pursue top quality research in an extremely collegial, student-friendly environment. As a relatively small department, we do not have research groups in all conceivable fields of physics, but what we have (astrophysics, relativity, cosmology; solar physics; optics; condensed matter; physics education) we do well.

Has the institution had a Climate for Women in Physics Site Visit or Gender Equity Conversation?

No
