Is there a family leave policy for graduate students? If so, describe.

Graduate Student Instructors are eligible for up to three weeks of leave in a 12-month period if they are unable to meet employment obligations because of personal illness, injury, or other disabling medical condition or due to the illness, injury or other disabling medical condition of a family member. In addition Graduate Student Instructors, upon request, will be granted a Parental Accommodation Period to not exceed six weeks after the birth or adoption of a child. The University is also in full compliance with the Family Medical Leave Act (FMLA).

Is there family health insurance for graduate students? If so, is it included in the stipend?

Health insurance is available free of charge to graduate students with employment fractions at or higher than 25% and most department-sponsored fellowship recipients. Coverage for family members may be purchased by the graduate student.

The UM Department of Physics is committed to a top-notch graduate education for members of the world community. We strive to foster an environment of collaboration and high-level scholarly activity between female graduate students, their colleagues, and the entire faculty. Women are encouraged to participate in a variety of groups on campus formed with the specific needs of women in mind: WISE (Women in Science and Engineering), AWIS (Association for Women in Science) and SWIP (Society of Women in Physics) are just a few examples.
