Please describe why someone applying to graduate school who is interested in a female-friendly department should choose your department.

At West Virginia University, the mentoring of graduate students (female and male) goes beyond the typical faculty-student interaction that occurs at most universities. Because we are a modest sized department, the faculty work closely with the students and take an active role in promoting their careers during and after their graduate research. Our female faculty play critical roles within the department and the respect accorded to them by the rest of the faculty serves as a good model for the student population. We seek the very best faculty and students that we can recruit to WVU, demand outstanding teaching and research from the faculty, and strive to reward faculty and student success independently of gender, ethnic origin, or race. Students interested in WVU would be best served by looking at our track record in training and then placing graduate students (both male and female) into good, post-graduate positions.

Has the institution had a Climate for Women in Physics Site Visit or Gender Equity Conversation?
