Is there a family leave policy for graduate students? If so, describe.

There is no formal leave policy. However, it is relatively easy to arrange temporary leaves within the department's program with the approval of advisor, graduate committee and department head.

Is there family health insurance for graduate students? If so, is it included in the stipend?

Yes, if a graduate student had a full-time GA position on campus they are eligible for health insurance. The department pays for a portion of the benefits and then GA is responsible for the other premiums. (for example, full cost of the GA insurance is $229.00 the GA employee's portion is $47.87.

Please describe why someone applying to graduate school who is interested in a female-friendly department should choose your department.

We specialize in nuclear astrophysics - dense matter equation of state - and stellar astrophysics of white dwarfs and cataclysmic variables. In addition we have a faculty member working in the area of surface physics.
