Please describe why someone applying to graduate school who is interested in a female-friendly department should choose your department.
The Howard University Department of Physics and Astronomy is a relatively small Department where faculty, staff and students all know each other. The Physics Department is a supportive environment and faculty members work one-on-one with undergraduate and graduate students. Of the twenty (20) undergraduate Physics majors, eight (8) are female; that is 40% of the total Physics undergraduate population. We have six (6) female graduate students and that is approximately 36% of the total number of graduate students (16). The Department is making every effort to recruit female students and, in the future, hopefully more female faculty which will make our environment even more hospitable for females.
Has the institution had a Climate for Women in Physics Site Visit or Gender Equity Conversation?
