Information not available

Is there a family leave policy for graduate students? If so, describe.

This policy has two parts, as it seeks to acknowledge the demands on and accommodate the needs of graduate students who give birth. It also provides relief to graduate students faced with the additional time demands of being the primary caregiver for an infant during that critical first year of life. For graduate students who give birth, 12 weeks of maternity leave are provided during which the birth mother continues to receive financial support, and teaching and other academic obligations are suspended. While applications are required, the benefit is automatic. Also, birth mothers or primary caregivers who are pursuing doctorates will be eligible for an extension of academic deadlines that provides for one additional term of financial support to complete their studies for each child they give birth to or adopt. More information is available on the Childbirth Accommodation and Adoption Policy website .

Is there family health insurance for graduate students? If so, is it included in the stipend?

Yes. Dependent health care insurance is available to graduate students at cost.

Please describe why someone applying to graduate school who is interested in a female-friendly department should choose your department.

In the Princeton Physics department, about 20% of the graduate students are female. They experience a very supportive and female-friendly environment and are actively involved with all aspects of departmental life, from the spring recital to the weekly Friday Beer to the Holiday Party. In addition, the University has a range of programs and policies that ensure that graduate students can meet the demands of personal and family life, while pursuing their academic career. Our female students play leadership roles in their research groups, and constitute half of the graduate students in one of the largest ones (experimental cosmology). Princeton female graduate students move onto successful careers in research and academia, with many of them landing faculty jobs at top Universities across the US and abroad.

Has the institution had a Climate for Women in Physics Site Visit or Gender Equity Conversation?
