We have a tradition of strong and enlightened leadership in the department, and we have long emphasized the importance of being family-friendly for faculty, staff, and students. Many of our male faculty have small children and their wives are employed outside the home, so they understand issues of work-life balance. A significant number of our graduate students (male and female) also have small children who are often seen around the building. We have been very alert to dual-career couples in our graduate student recruiting, and make efforts to assist the partners of the students we admit (it helps that there are two other major research universities near by). We have a significant concentration of female students, especially in our astrophysics group (in many years it is majority female), so the women in our department do not tend to feel isolated. We have many social events (picnics, potlucks) that bring all members of the department together. The environment is very open, and behavior that is denigrating to women is not tolerated under any circumstances.
