Is there a family leave policy for graduate students? If so, describe.

Yes, A student (either the mother or the mother's partner) who expects the birth of a child or plans the adoption of a child should consult with her/his adviser and work supervisor (e.g., department chairperson, department manager, research principal investigator) and make appropriate arrangements for the anticipated absence from the assistantship assignment. The University’s policy is to not interrupt an assistantship for a parental leave up to 5 weeks, during which time the student is excused from the duties associated with the assistantship.

Is there family health insurance for graduate students? If so, is it included in the stipend?

No. Subsidized Heath Insurance Plan is Student-Only

Please describe why someone applying to graduate school who is interested in a female-friendly department should choose your department.

Our Department sees itself as a big family and provides a friendly atmosphere for all student. We give individualized attention to all student and their specific needs. This personalized care goes beyond the teaching and research related topics. There is great camaraderie among our very diverse graduate student body.
