Physics 40 faculty, 35 tenured, 5 tenure track. There aer 38 male faculty and 2 female (tenured)faculty.

How many graduate students-- male/female?

130 graduate students 110 male/20 female

How many post doctoral associates - male/female?

24 post doctoral associates 21 male/3 female

Is there a family leave policy for graduate students? If so, describe.

Yes, there is a family leave policy available to graduate students with a 50% time appointment.

Is there family health insurance for graduate students? If so, is it included in the stipend?

Family health insurance is available to students with graduate assistantships and fellowships.

Please describe why someone applying to graduate school who is interested in a female-friendly department should choose your department.

The School of Physics and Astronomy at the University of Minnesota had a Climate for Women in Physics site visit on March 11, 2003. At the School of Physics and Astronomy, the physics faculty and staff are dedicated to the success of all students Students have the opportunity for flexible degrees, including combining physics with other research areas. We actively recruit students from small colleges as well as large universities. Senior women graduate students have developed a mentorship program. It's founder having received a university award recognizing its value and impact on women students beginning their academic career. The College created a Graduate Student Science and Engineering Women's group that sponsors a women's issue seminar series, providing networking between disciplines, as well as sponsoring social activities. In addition, the activities of the physics women's group is encouraged and financially supported by the department.
