Is there a family leave policy for graduate students? If so, describe.

Graduate students may apply for a leave of absence. This is granted for the semester(s) needed.

Is there family health insurance for graduate students? If so, is it included in the stipend?

Yes. It is not included in the stipend, so students have to pay for the family health insurance, but it is subsidized considerably by the University of Utah.

Please describe why someone applying to graduate school who is interested in a female-friendly department should choose your department.

We are striving to increase our female enrollment at both the undergraduate and graduate levels. At the undergraduate level we currently have 40 female majors (out of total 216 students).

The faculty consider the student environment critical to the success of the department. There is a monthly luncheon held for women faculty and students once per month paid for by the department. This gives them a chance to meet and discuss issues relevant to the female students.

An undergraduate course Women in Physics has been developed over the last years. It is now being taught on a regular basis, with considerable student enrollment.

Has the institution had a Climate for Women in Physics Site Visit or Gender Equity Conversation?

No
