Please describe why someone applying to graduate school who is interested in a female-friendly department should choose your department.
We have excellent research programs in a broad range of areas (see http://physics.wisc.edu), and we strive to be a friendly, open, and supportive department in which all students, staff, and faculty have the opportunity and support to learn effectively and perform exceptional research. Our efforts to increase diversity and to support underrepresented groups are aided greatly by strong institutional support, including support for outside lecturers and other events from the Provost and from the WISELI (Women in Science and Engineering Leadership Institute) program. More evidence of the strong institutional support for diversity is that five out of eight chairs of science departments in the College of Letters and Sciences are women. There is on-campus day care at which students have top priority for spaces.
Has the institution had a Climate for Women in Physics Site Visit or Gender Equity Conversation?
