University of Louisville (Physics and Astronomy)

How many tenure-track or tenured faculty -- male/female?

14/2

How many graduate students-- male/female?

17/5

How many post doctoral associates - male/female?

4/1

Is there a family leave policy for graduate students? If so, describe.

By default, the campus FMLA policy does not cover GTAs or GRAs. However, departments are able to request exceptions for these students. The campus FMLA policy is a paid 12-week absence.

Is there family health insurance for graduate students? If so, is it included in the stipend?

For TAs and RAs, it is free. It is limited in access to doctors in the UofL Medical system, but this is a fairly large system.
For students not supported as TA or RA, campus insurance costs $100 per semester.

Please describe why someone applying to graduate school who is interested in a female-friendly department should choose your department.

We certainly try to be a female-friendly department.

We have created a new organization within the department: SWIPA - the Society for Women In Physics & Astronomy. This will provide an opportunity for female students, staff, and faculty to meet socially, to establish mentoring relationships, and to provide input to the department chair.

Our chapter of the Society of Physics Students (SPS) welcomes both graduate and undergraduate students and usually has a significant number of women officers - including 6 of the last 9 presidents.

Has the institution had a Climate for Women in Physics Site Visit or Gender Equity Conversation?

No
